Piros
Petar Popovic is a multimedia artist known as Piros. His work spans murals painting calligraphy illustration and design and he has been active in street art since 2005. Calligraphy is a central part of his practice and its influence appears in almost all of his pieces giving them a precise rhythmic character. His portfolio presents this range and his visual language more directly than any written introduction.
In Block 45 Piros is best known for Dzamutka a recurring figure in his work that he has developed for many years. Dzamutka is a hybrid of a bird and a bee and for the artist it represents dedication the ability to rise and a sharp sting when pushed too far. The name comes from a Roma dialect where it can mean something frightening or unseen which fits the idea that Dzamutka can be everything and nothing at the same time.
In later works Piros often contrasts a flat two dimensional background with a three dimensional Dzamutka making the creature the only sculpted element in the scene. This approach is visible in his mural in Block 45 titled How Dzamutka Discovered Fire described on the Urban Heritage Hub project.
